Such a Deal!
If making your own California wine right here in New Jersey has become too easy and affordable, you may want to take advantage of the winemaking deal offered by the Harlan Estate winery in Napa, California. For a mere $140,000 membership (along with annual dues and a $50 per bottle fee), you can claim several rows of grapes as your own. Estate winemakers will then supervise as you crush, ferment, barrel and bottle your own three barrels of wine. Personalized labels are included.
This is being promoted as “...a learning club, a physical and intellectual pursuit that results in the creation of one’s very own wine. Prior to this offer, anyone wanting this direct, saturated experience of making wine had to spend millions of dollars to create their own winery…All the benefits and rewards, and none of the pitfalls or risks associated with owning a winery are offered.” –Zachys Wine Auctions. Caveats include that winemakers don’t own the land, but are permitted access to certain rows of vines, and that the wine cannot be sold, it is just for personal use or to be given as gifts.
What a remarkable idea! Of course, the price tag that goes along with it keeps us from worrying about losing too many of our winemakers to the Harlan Estate winery. To be fair, we can’t compare with one additional bonus of the California offer: clubhouse rights are included with the membership and dues. While we love the interior of The Wine Room, we’re pretty sure that as a clubhouse, ours doesn’t compare
